GRADUATE TEACHER PROGRAM

What is the GTP? By Jennifer Brady, lead GPTI.

Dear fellow grad students,

Welcome to another year! I am happy to see all of my old friends and looking forward to getting to know new ones.
As Lead Graduate Teachers, Valentina and my role is to serve as the liaisons between the Graduate Teacher Program (GTP) and the Spanish and Portuguese Department.

Our GTP is one of the biggest and best in North American universities. They offer two types of certification: the Graduate Teacher Certificate (GTC) and the Professional Development Certificate (PDC). In our department, the GTC is the most popular, since most of us go on to teach, and the easiest to get since our pedagogy class counts for 16 discipline-specific workshops. Yet, there are also two tracks available in the PDC: Preparing Future Faculty (PFF), which requires a mentorship project, and Business, Government and Industry (BGI), which requires a professional internship.

GTP workshops are given by CU grad students and faculty from different departments. Attending workshops is a great way to network, to learn new approaches to teaching and learning, and to acquire resume-building skills, job-hunting tips, and tips for acing interviews. The best aspect of the GTP, however, just may be that it offers a gateway to getting involved with the larger CU community.

I urge you to pursue a GTP certificate! I’d be delighted to help you along the way.

Here’s to a great year!

Jennifer Brady.
